*Note that two numbers are given for the size of the lid and two for the size of the base.

Comments: | The boxes shown here both have the same type of base but their lids are rather different. The lid with four vanes (right hand side of image) is an example of Tomoko Fuse's Octagon Knob lid design. It requires two different types of units (A and C). The A lid units were made from a paper with a traditional print and the C lid units were made from green paper; then the two types of units were alternated during the assembly process. The other lid (left hand side of image) is an example of Tomoko's Knob and Petals design. It requires two types of units (A and B). Here I folded four A lid units from orange-gold paper, and then I folded four B lid units from paper but with a multi-color print. The two types of lid units were alternated during assembly. Both types contribute to making the eight raised vanes on the lid, but the four-petal flower at the lid's center is formed only by the B units. For both boxes, the base was assembled in a similar manner by alternating A base units with B base units. Using two different types of units allows the folder to explore a wide range of complex octagonal designs, and it also results in boxes sturdy enough to hold a wide variety of gifts. |
