The boxes shown here are all irregular hexagons. A regular hexagon has six sides of equal length, but these irregular hexagons have two long sides of the same length combined with four short sides of the same length. This shape is often called a Prism. Tomoko Fuse has given this style of box the name "Two Squares." I think it refers to the neat square shapes which usually appear inside the box -- in the roof of the lid and the floor of the base. Three of the prism-shaped boxes shown here were constructed according to Tomoko Fuse's instructions and they have the square shapes inside. The other two boxes have lids where the neat square shape appears on the outside instead of the inside. This is a variation which I created by reversing some of Tomoko's folds. In my variation, the square shape provides a little slot or pocket on top of the lid which is perfect for inserting a small message card, like the "be happy" message shown on one of these boxes. |
