*Note that two numbers are given for the size of the lid and two for the size of the base.
The larger number is the measurement from a point at any corner to the point at the opposite corner.
(Diagram A)
The smaller number is the measurement from the center of any side to the center of the opposite
side. (Diagram B)

Comments: | These elegant boxes designed by Christiane Bettens (Mélisande), are self-closing. They do not have a separate lid and base. The whole structure of each box -- both lid and base -- is formed from a single sheet of paper. This type of box collapses closed with a slight twisting motion. Pushing down gently at the center of the lid then locks it closed tightly. To open such a box, grasp two of the lid flaps -- one flap on the opposite side of the box from the other -- and pull them outward. Note that the leaf decorations on the lids are NOT made separately and then attached. Instead, they are integral to the design of the box. The leaves look best when using double-sided paper with a design on one side and complementary or contrasting solid color on the reverse, as shown here. I have tucked a different, small origami treasure into each of these boxes -- a koi fish, a crane, a balloon, a peacock, and a carp -- all shown in the side view image at left. |
