Comments:Non-modular octagonal boxes like these are very challenging to make because of the many precise pre-creases required and the use of a tricky "twist-down" technique.

If you have already mastered Tomoko Fuse's non-modular hexagon boxes, then these octagons will be easier; many of the folds/steps are very similar.

Scoring the pre-creases helps a lot, and the types of papers used here are strong enough to take scoring without tearing and to hold sharp creases without breakthrough at corners.

These beautiful, shimmering papers are just stiff enough to maintain the shape of a useful box, yet soft and flexible enough to make executing the "twist-down" technique less difficult. The glossy surface of the silkscreened Urushi paper gives some of the boxes in this set an elegant laquered look.
