Comments:The challenge in folding these lovely pleated bowls is to make all of the precreases for the pleats as neatly and precisely as possible.

If you get the precreases right, then the pleats will fall into place easily at later steps in the folding process, but if the precreases are uneven or sloppy, then it will be difficult to form the pleats properly.

Tomoko Fuse suggests making two Hana Bowls -- one slightly smaller than the other -- and then nesting the smaller one as a liner inside the larger one.

The liner not only increases the beauty of the model but also strengthens it. Without a liner, this style of bowl is more decorative than practical.

Double-sided paper works best for Hana Bowls. If you choose not to add a liner, the entire interior of the bowl will reveal the reverse side of the paper.

Even with a liner, some of the reverse side of the paper will show around the upper rim of the bowl. This effect is one of the attractive features of this model -- so keep it in mind when choosing your paper.
