When serving a traditional Japanese meal to guests, you can make your table look especially elegant by enclosing the chopsticks in wrappers made from beautiful washi paper, like the two crane-shaped wrappers shown here. Cranes (tsuru) are an important symbol in Japanese culture. Traditionally, they represent good fortune, long life, and fidelity. After World War II, cranes came to symbolize hope for peace and healing. Because cranes mate for life, chopstick wrappers featuring this symbol are especially appropriate as gifts or favors at engagement parties, wedding showers or receptions, and anniversary celebrations. This style of chopstick wrapper is not difficult to create, but executing its simple design with high-quality paper will result in a very rich-looking accessory. The two wrappers shown here has been joined together with a gold metallic cord, tied in a loose Reef Knot. This item earned a Blue Ribbon at the 2020 Charlotte County Fair (FL).
