This non-modular origami model was constructed entirely without the use of glue or any adhesive. The finished model holds together securely because of how its folds overlap or interlock.
The napkin rings in this coordinated set of four are based on a design by Francis Ow which can also be used to make a bookmark.
I modified Ow's design a little to accommodate the size of the paper sheets I wanted to use, and to get a ring with a large enough diameter to fit around my rolled-up napkins. The resulting rings are 5 cm wide and have a diameter of 4 cm.
If my napkins were a lot bulkier and I needed a bigger diameter ring, then I would need to increase the length of the rectangular sheets used for this project.
Double-sided paper is essential to achieve the lovely color-change effect in this model. Here I've used paper with a traditional floral pattern on one side and a solid pink color on the other.
To create a coordinated set, I folded two rings where the heart motif reveals the floral pattern and the ring under the heart is solid pink; then I folded two models with the opposite effect -- a solid pink heart motif atop a floral-patterned ring.
This set of napkin rings was awarded a Blue Ribbon in the Paper Crafting/Origami category of the Arts & Craft Exhibition at the 2024 Charlotte County Fair in Florida.
