Comments: | The lids on these non-modular pentagonal boxes were very challenging to make. They require a great number of precise pre-creases. Tomoko Fuse suggests scoring the pre-creases, which I found very helpful, but not all types of paper can stand up to such treatment -- the papers used here could and they performed beautifully. Nepalese Lokta is an artisan paper handmade in Nepal from the fibrous inner bark of high-elevation Daphne (laurel) shrubs. This paper is known for its durability. Its resistance to tearing makes it perfect for creating complex origami box lid designs where the intersection of multiple creases can sometimes create tears in other types of paper. The Lokta used here was offered as a large roll on a tube, making possible to cut sheets of varying sizes. The Yuzen Chiyogami Washi used here was offered in very large sheets on a per sheet basis. These very large sheets were too big for me to cut down accurately with my own equipment, but I was able to special order the paper in smaller sheets by paying a cutting fee. |
