Comments: | The lids on these non-modular pentagonal boxes were very challenging to make. They require a great number of precise pre-creases. Tomoko Fuse suggests scoring the pre-creases and I found this very helpful, but not all types of paper can stand up to such treatment -- the washi used here could. It did not tear or crack at the intersectioin of multiple creases like some of the other paper I
tried. The washi was not too bulky where multiple layers overlapped, nor so flimsy that my boxes collapsed when I actually tried to use them. It's flexibility and strength were ideal for the box styles shown here -- plus I love the rich colors and traditional patterns. "Kagayaki" means "radiance" in Japanese; with its pastel colors against a gold metallic background, the Kagayaki Yuzen paper certainly is radiant! The kagayaki paper was sold as an assortment in a pack, but the other washi paper used here was offered in very large sheets on a per sheet basis. These very large sheets were too big for me to cut down accurately with my own equipment, but I was able to special order the paper in smaller sheets by paying a cutting fee. All of these boxes feature vanes which rise to an apex in the center, where they have been topped off with faux pearls or small shiny orbs. |
