Comments: | These lovely cube-shaped boxes are self-closing. They do not have a separate lid and base. The whole structure of each box, both lid and base, is formed from a single sheet of paper. This style of box features four leaflets on top, but those leaflets are not folded separately and then attached to the model. Instead, they are integral to the model. The leaflets are created by making delicate pleat folds in the four corners of the square sheet from which this style of box is made. Double-sided paper works best, since the leaflets reveal the reverse side of the paper. Here I have used sheets with a variety of traditional patterns on one side and complementary or contrasting solid colors on the reverse. The most challenging part of making this model is the "collapse" -- which entails lifting and twisting the side walls of the box, then pushing down the flaps which form the top, so that each flap overlaps the next one. Even if you fold all the pre-creases correctly, the "collapse" can still be challenging. The first three top flaps will overlap easily, but getting the fourth flap tucked in neatly may require a bit of patience. Once closed, this style of box is very sturdy, and its beautiful appearance is well worth a little extra effort. |
