This modular origami model was constructed entirely without the use of glue or any adhesive. The finished structure holds together securely because of how the units are interlocked by inserting a tab-like part of one unit into a slot or pocket of another.
Beads have been attached by sewing them through the structure with ribbon and a long or curved needle.
This is Maria Sinayskaya's variation on her basic Imperial Rose Sonobe design. I like this variation much more than the basic version.
Note that the unit for this model is exactly the same as the unit for Sinayskaya's Royal Rose Sonobe (12 units) and her Royal Rose Cube (6 units) -- these ornaments are all part of the same family. The video tutorial referenced above shows how to make the basic unit.
The kusudama shown here was chosen as Best of Show in the Papercrafting category at the 2018 Charlotte County Fair in Florida.
It would be a lovely decoration for a wedding shower or a Valentine's Day party. However, it would need to be handled gently.
When made without glue, as here, this model is rather fragile, although beading does help to stabilize it.
